Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung
cancer comprises about 20% of all lung cancers and is strongly
associated with smoking. Small cell lung cancer usually starts in the
central portion of the airways and spreads rapidly to other organs.
Because of the nature of early spread in this disease surgery is not
generally a treatment option. Small cell lung cancer is usually treated
with chemotherapy. Radiation therapy may be combined with chemotherapy
if the cancer is limited to the lung. Some times radiation therapy to
brain is used to prevent the disease from coming back in the brain
following successful treatment with chemotherapy. Unlike non-small cell
lung cancer the small cell lung cancer is usually staged as limited
stage disease and extensive stage disease.
