Seeking Urinary Incontinence Patients To Participate In Study

Urinary incontinence, or the accidental release of urine, can be debilitating for those who struggle with the condition. It can decrease self-esteem and confidence and may cause people to put their social lives on hold or avoid physical activity out of fear of an accident. Leakage can occur without warning when someone coughs, laughs, sneezes, or has sudden urges to go to the bathroom and can't get there in time.

Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing are seeking women with urinary incontinence to participate in a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study of the short-term and long-term effectiveness of acupuncture on urinary incontinence.

Participants should be women 30 years of age or older who experience involuntary urine loss sessions at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's (UPMC) Center for Integrative Medicine at UPMC Shadyside twice a week for six weeks. Participants will receive reimbursement for either parking or public transportation costs and their time, as well as a PDA used for documenting urinary accidents.
